UPDATE
The Christ University Debate Society has had its platter full with tournaments for the past few months, and before we head into the big one at the end of the season, we thought we’d display our standings around or on the podium. However before we begin to pin up the laurels we’d like to thank Jake Mercer who headed back to his homeland last month, for being such an invaluable addition to our DebSoc however short the duration. We hope to collaborate with him in the future and wish him the greatest luck.
Starting with the Christ University Model United Nations - The First Inter Collegiate MUN to be held at and hosted by Christ University. The winners were Vipul Nanda, from the National Law School University Debate Society who stood first followed by Ajay Kumar and Jake Mercer of Christ DebSoc tieing at second place. The turnout included forty Christites, ranging from Pre-university levels to Degree seniors. Dipti Ramesh-the current president of the Debsoc chaired the event.
Next up was the RV Debate Tournament which saw our Dipti Ramesh, Shreya Kalra and Jake Mercer qualify to adjudicate the Semi-final round while Ajay Kumar chaired the quarter final round for the novice teams. The performance levels were sustained in the National Law School Debate Tournament as well where Dipti broke till the semi- final round and judged the novice quarter final round while Ajay judged novice semis. Our debate team comprising Kishore Kumar, Tanmoy Chakroborty and Prasad Subramaniam qualified for the quarter final round. The JIPMER conventional Debate competition was conquered by Tanmoy and Ajay who secured the First and Second position respectively.
In order to spur the dormant debaters in the university into stepping up to the podium, the Christ university Debsoc recently held a Conventional debating tournament , a somewhat unofficial battle cry for possible recruitment. The event was judged by two of our universities most well informed professors Prof. Suparna Kar and Prof. Padma Kumar, according to whose gauging newcomer Rajni Naik was awarded the first prize. We’d like to extend our congratulations and hope she continues the trend in future tournaments.

Dear Fellow's
Dear Fellow's,
I recently heard about the progress you guys have been making towards organizing the next CUPD and I was really so glad, excited and pumped up for all of you. The friendships I have forged and the experiences I have had debating, working and having fun with all of you have defined my college experience. I think building, doing random things, leading, hanging out, thinking, blah blah, all of these textures of involvement & associations that have been a part of my process have solidified this foundation & grounding which I think cannot be replaced by any other experience in University. The Debating Society organically has been able to offer this realm of experience and at the same time has given access and promoted people to debate, travel, make friends, think and understand the world a little better than before.
I want you to take this forward. I want you to create that home of possibility a lot of us have experienced to consistently move forward. I want you guys to take the initiative and create value in the opportunities you see. I want you to stand up as young leaders and make things happen. It is now in your hands to ensure that the society grows stronger, significant and most importantly better than before. But at the same time remembering always the values of friendship, humility, "heads high and hearts strong" and all that goes with it that makes us the society we have always stood for.
I do miss all of you. You guys make an awesome team and I am sure all of you would do a fantastic job in putting up the next Christ University Parliamentary Debate. I wish you guys all of the very best and will post you a lot of luck via the Royal Mail.
Luck and Love,

ECOSOC Agenda Brief
The Economic and Social Council
Agenda: The Economic and Social instability and insecurity of the “Global
South”.
The “Global South” is a term commonly used to refer to the widely known ““North- South” divide
that came into prominence soon after the second world war. It encompasses nearly 157 nations
but is not differentiated wholly on geography. The “Global South” comprises of Central and South
America, Africa, Middle East, Central , South and South East Asia (Japan, Australia, South Korea,
Singapore, and New Zealand are not included in the south). The traditional divide is used to highlight
the difference socio-economic and political conditions between the developed and developing nations.
One key criteria used to classify a developing nation as the same is that though often wrought with
social and political upheaval they possess great potential for economic and cultural growth in an
ever globalising world. The main challenges faced by these countries is the lack of consistency in a
political and social stiructure due to corruption, civil war, ethnic and religious tensions, tranditional
values etc. This inconsistency and its secondary ripples out in to a prevalent state of instability.
The chief aim of this conference is to discuss in detail the instability and insecurity that is present
in the “Global South” and what are their causes and effects- including but not limited to –money
laundering and corruption, human rights violations, transnational crime etc. The final objectives
however, is to draw from these discussions and reach a plausible and constructive solution to these
issues and pass a resolution on the same. Delegates are requested to be mindful of current issues
such as the global recession, the Afghanistan War etc. which closely involve the Global “North”.
Though the discussion will be south centric, the main purpose is to deliberate the actions of the entire
world community and suggest ways to remove this divide.
Questions to Consider:
1. What are the major conflicts and trends in the “Global South” that leads to instability and
insecurity?
2. How have these trends effected the global stage and how intricately are they linked
to the “North”? What are the chef challenges in this regard faced by your country?
3. Is the structure of the institutions and the way in which South-South Cooperation has been
promoted and developed until now is an effective one?
4. How to use the experiences of successful developing countries and transfer tacit knowledge
to improve the situation?
5. How to improve financing of projects? Is aid effective or, alternatively, should FDI of
the “North” in developing countries be promoted?

INVITATION
The Christ University Debate Society proudly welcomes you to the first ever Model United Nations held at Christ University. The MUN, which will be held from the 28th -29th August, 2010 seeks to incorporate the strategies and techniques used in the real United Nations World Assembly to familiarise participants with global issues and diplomatic ties. P.S. This mess will be off the chiz-ain.
ABOUT MODEL UNITED NATIONS
A Model United Nations replicates the diplomatic dealings amongst member nations in the United Nations Organization in the form of a simulator which provides the participants with an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the political structure, alliances and foreign policy of the nation they choose to represent as delegates. Apart from that the participants learn to discuss global issues, pass resolutions and involve themselves in international affairs.
The Christ University MUN seeks to enrich the participant’s database and knowledge about concerns that are global in nature and provide the participant with the know-how of the workings of a body like the U.N.O.
● Each participant represents his/her nation as a delegate in either the Security Council or Economic and Social council.
● Each participant is acquainted with the process of forming international ties with other delegates.
● Participants are also allowed to register to represent the World Press which chronicles the events of the day.

The 2nd Bangalore Circuit Debate Tournament
The Christ University Debate Society proudly hosted the 2nd Bangalore Circuit Debate. The entire event went off, seemingly glitch-free with most if not all the veterans present. Apart from being able to succesfully continue this trend, we hoped that all the new additions to our DebSoc would get a front-row seat in watching the duels. We hope that we have sparked an interest that would go on to make our novice teams a common sight at the upcoming tournaments. Consider this a shakedown cruise, and gear yourselves up for greater argumentative strategies and bigger platforms.
Here's hoping you all had a good time.
